A. GENERAL

  1. This Exhibition will be conducted according to the recommended practices of the Photographic Society of America. It is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and conditions. Membership in any photographic organization is not required.

  2. The original image must be made by the entrant. Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else.

  3. Subject to divisional restrictions (i.e., Nature, Photo Travel, Photojournalism), images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker, and artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may be incorporated if the photographic content predominates.

  4. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as their own and permits the sponsor to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for display and/or publication in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. Neither PSA nor the exhibition sponsor assumes any responsibility for any misuse of copyright by anyone.

  5. Digital images and/or prints so similar as to be almost identical must bear the same title. Images or prints previously accepted in any S4C International Exhibition, or so similar as to be almost identical, regardless of title, are ineligible in the same Division. Previously accepted titles in the same Division are ineligible. Titles must be 35 characters or fewer.

  6. An image can only be entered into one Division in the same year.

  7. There are two sections (competitions) in each Division. Four (4) digital images or prints can be entered in each Section. The four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging.

  8. Digital entries must be entered using the online entry process found at the link below. CDs and email attachments are not permitted. Digital images must not exceed 1024 pixels along the longest dimension.

  9. Print entrants must complete an entry form at the same link, where instructions for payment and for sending prints can also be found.

  10. All possible care will be taken to safeguard print entries, but S4C will not assume responsibility for loss or damage to entries while in transit or during the exhibition. Prints will only be returned to the entrant if the mailing surcharge is paid.

  11. Scores of judges who are close relatives or partners of entrants will not be counted in the entrant’s total score for any of the entrant’s images. An average of the other two judges’ scores will be used. Such images are also not eligible for medals or honorable mentions, although they may be accepted into the exhibition.

  12. Any entry without the appropriate fee will not be judged, forwarded to another exhibition, or returned.

  13. No titles or names of entrants may be visible to the judges on the image.

Monochrome Theme - Flower or Flowers: Images that capture the texture, pattern, and beauty of flowers – including close-ups (macros), single blooms, multiple blossoms, or a field of flowers. Natural or arranged shots may be entered, as may shots taken outdoors or in a studio. Concentrate on images that show a unique style, unusual perspective or extraordinary light situations.

  5. A monochrome print is defined as having no more than one color; a tonal range from black to white with shades of gray or any other single color. Prints that are multi-toned or have an isolated spot of color are not eligible for Monochrome (but may be entered in Color).

  6. An entrant may enter any number of sections (i.e., from one section to four sections).

  7. An image which has been previously accepted in one class is not eligible in another class of the same category (color or monochrome).

  12. Titles will not be read at the judging.

B. DIVISIONS AND SECTIONS (continued)

DIGITAL DIVISIONS

COLOR PROJECTED IMAGE DIVISION: DIGITAL

  1. There are two sections: General (Open) and Theme (Flower or Flowers). Only digital images can be entered, using the Entry Form at this link.

  2. Judges will consider images both for their technical and pictorial merit. The image should be properly exposed, be appropriately in focus, and have appropriate depth of field. The image should have strong composition, pleasing quality, and color impact. The content is unrestricted.

  3. Flower or Flowers: Images that capture the color and beauty of flowers – including close-ups (macros), single blooms, multiple blossoms, or fields of color. Natural or arranged shots may be entered, as may shots taken outdoors or in a studio. Concentrate on images that show a unique style, unusual perspective, or extraordinary light situations.

  4. Titles will not be read at the judging.

NATURE DIVISION: DIGITAL

  1. There are two sections: General (Open) and Wildlife. Only digital images can be entered, using the Entry Form at this link.

  2. Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict observations from all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well informed person will be able to identify the subject material and to certify as to its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except on the rare occasion where those human elements enhance the nature story. The presence of scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals is permissible. Photographs of artificially produced hybrid plants or animals, mounted specimens, or obviously set arrangements, are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add to, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.

  3. Authentic Wildlife is defined as one or more organisms living free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat. Therefore, landscapes, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or any living subject taken under controlled conditions are not eligible for Wildlife competitions.

  4. Only Wildlife photographs may be entered in the Wildlife Section. Wildlife photos may be entered in the General Section also.

  5. White or grey borders of up to 2 pixels in width are permitted. Larger or color borders are not permitted.

  6. Titles will not be read at the judging.

PHOTO TRAVEL DIVISION: DIGITAL

  1. There are two sections: General (Open) and Theme (People and Food). Only digital images can be entered, using the Entry Form at this link.

  2. The subject matter must portray Photo Travel. A Photo Travel image must express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state. Photo Travel images have no geographical limitations. Ultra close-ups which lose their identity and studio-type model shots are unacceptable. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the image, without changing the photo travel content, are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.

  3. People and Food: Images that show the relationship between people and food all over the world. This includes a person or persons planting, harvesting, transporting, selling, preparing, cooking, eating, or preserving food.

  4. White or grey borders of up to 2 pixels in width are permitted. Larger or color borders are not permitted.

  5. Titles will not be read at the judging.

PHOTOJOURNALISM DIVISION: DIGITAL

  1. There are two sections: General (Open) and Human Interest. Only digital images can be entered, using the Entry Form at this link.

  2. Photojournalism entries shall consist of images or sequences* of images with informative content and emotional impact, including human interest, documentary and spot news. The journalistic value of the image shall receive priority over pictorial quality. In the interest of credibility, images that misrepresent the truth and model or staged set-ups are not permitted. Techniques that add to, relocate, replace or remove any element of the original image, except by cropping, are not permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the image, without changing the photojournalism content, are permitted. All adjustments must appear natural.

*All parts of a sequence should be combined into single JPEG image so that they will be projected simultaneously. Each sequence thus counts as one image in a Section.

  3. Human Interest is defined as an image depicting a person or persons in an interactive, emotional or unusual situation, excluding sports action.

  4. White or grey borders of up to 2 pixels in width are permitted. Larger or color borders are not permitted.

  5. Titles will not be read at the judging.
